“Hey, man. What’s up? I’m Derek.”

I wanted to die. You could have knocked me over with a feather right then. I had no breath in my body. I couldn’t breathe.

Slowly, Maurice stood to meet Derek’s hand that was outstretched, waiting to shake his hand.

I hopped up. “Maurice, this is Derek, Simone’s father. Derek, this is Maurice, my... friend.”

I could see Maurice holding back a grimace. I could feel his disappointment. Even Simone looked at me like I was crazy as Derek just smiled through tension. He shook Maurice’s hand, which appeared to be weak with disappointment.

“Nice to meet you, man,” he told Maurice before turning his attention to Simone. “How did everything go?”

I couldn’t hear anything after that. I tried my best to avoid Maurice’s burning eyes. I tried my best to hold back tears. I felt like a piece of shit. Yes, Maurice cared about me. He was good to me. But I wanted Derek. I even felt like I was disrespecting him in some way by having Maurice in his presence. I just wanted to curl up into a ball and die right there.

Then, to make matters worse, Maurice reached and held my hand. I knew what he was doing. He was testing me and the commitment that I agreed to have with him. And like an asshole, I tried to play it off. I took my hand from him and acted like I was looking for something in my purse.

“Tuh,” I heard him grunt.

“You mind if I go, Ma?”

Simone’s words caught me off guard and brought me back into the room. “Huh?”

When Derek looked like he was holding back a laugh, my heart sank to the pit of my stomach.

“Do you mind if I go out to eat with Daddy?” she asked. “I know you wanted to go shopping. Can we do that tomorrow?”

I smiled through shame and the urge to burst into tears. I barely had breath as I felt myself shaking while I said, “Sure, baby. No problem.”

Simone happily followed her father out of the room. Derek looked even happier to have an excuse to free himself from the tension.

I moved my feet to follow them. Maurice grabbed me by the elbow—stopping me and allowing the door to close us in.

“What the fuck was that?” he barked.

I played dumb. “What was what?”

He breathed inwardly, seemingly to calm himself down. Even at that moment, he was more to me than Derek ever was. He was making an effort—the best he could—not to hurt me.

“I’m your ‘friend,’ Cecily?” Before I could respond, he cut me off. “This motherfucker broke your heart over and over again, and you diss me for this nigga?”

There was no more niceness. I could see the anger rising from his face like steam. “Maurice...”

“I can’t believe you!”

“I…I…” I couldn’t even find the words to say. I was so emotionally fucked up. I couldn’t even think. I wanted to run after Derek to explain Maurice. I wanted to run away from these judgmental eyes that Maurice was giving me.
